Finding my voice through writing while living with epilepsy.
A Personal Editorial · Jenna Hunter
There are chapters in life we never anticipate writing.
Living with epilepsy has taught me that life does not always follow the plans we make. Yet somewhere along this journey, I found a creative space where imagination could take me beyond uncertainty.
I found refuge in writing.
Through storytelling, I could create extraordinary places, explore relationships, and build entire worlds from a single thought. As a hospitality professional, I have spent years creating experiences for others. Writing allows me to create experiences in a different way.
More Than a Creative Outlet
Living with a neurological condition can bring experiences that are not always visible to others. Writing offers me a place to explore thoughts and emotions, and to imagine worlds beyond everyday uncertainty. Some people may prefer a journal, poetry, or a letter they never send. There is no perfect way to begin.
An Invitation to Write
Creative expression is not a treatment or cure for epilepsy, but it may support emotional well-being for some people. You do not need to be an accomplished writer. Begin with a sentence, describe a place that brings you peace, or create a character you admire. Your words do not have to be beautiful to be meaningful.
Writing reminds me that I am a creator, a dreamer, a professional, and a woman with stories worth telling. My diagnosis is one part of my life, not its entire definition.
We are more than the challenges we experience. We are also the stories we choose to create.
With warmth and purpose,
